' ■ » ■ ' •!* — "/-y • ■' LEVIN SWIMMING CLUB OVER 200 COMPETE The weather was fine'-though with a distinct autumnal nip in ihe aL for the Levin Amateur Swimming Club's grand carnival at the Cdrc nation Baths last evening. It was no deterrent to the compeliuors, 200 of whom were ass'embled. In addition to a full inuster ojl ioc-a.. swimmers, four Palmerston North clubs and the Feilding Club weiy strongly represented. Competitioi. was keen and the majority of th finishes were close and exciting Every available inch of accommp dation for spectators was occupied, and they were treated to a goou evening's sport. In some of the events there weri five and six heats to decide thos. to compete in the finals, and, th standard of swimming in these was very high. The Norcn Island Iul and 200 yards lady backstrok^ champion, Miss M'. Tremaine, oi Palmerston North, swam a gooa race in the open 50 yards backstroke to run a close second to. J. Cozens, of Terrace End. The final of the men's 50 yards freestyle wai a most exciting race, with five oi the contestants abreast one yard from the finish; F. Fox, of Red Cross, won by a touch from A. Cozens, of Terrace End, with a similar distance away to P. Baker, who was third. A. Cozens won the men's 100 yards freestyle comfortably, while P. Stannard, of Levin,
just managed to romp home m the . intermediate boys' 100 yards breaststroke.
