ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS
NATIONAL MEETING ENDS AUCKLANDERS OUTSTANDING WANGANUI, March 3. Leading practically all the way, W. Wells (West Coast, North Island) won the three-mile title when the New Zealand amateur athletic championships were concluded in fine but dull weather at Cook's Gardens, Wanganui, on Saturday afternoon. Wells finished about seven yards ahead of W. N. Burrow (Otago), who ran consistently well and over the final half lap put on a burst in an effort to overtake the West Coast man. The title-holder, W. J. Potter (Auckland), was unplaced. Another West Coast champion, S. A. Lay, retained the title for the javelin throw. lt was the fifth occasion on which Lay has won this event at a national meeting. The crowd at Cook's- Gardens was a record for any sport gathering held there this season, more than 8000 being present. Overnight rain and much usage had affected the track to some extent, and it was not as fast as on the previous day. Outstanding among the competitors were two Auckland men, D. M. Harris and R. Agate. Harris won both the 440 and 880 yards championships, while Agate retained his titles in the 100 and 220 yards. Because of straining a tendon, Agate, however, was unable to contest the final of the 440 yards. No new record was established, but J. Hyslop (Otago) won the one-mile walk championship in 6min.26 4-5 sec., only 2-5sec. off the New Zealand record. On the previous da Hyslop had clipped 2 l-5sec. from the New Zealand record for the three-mile walk, returning 21 min. 34 2-5sec. The Auckland team was the most successful at the championships and with 70 points retained the N.Z.A.A.A. Championship Shield, awarded to the centre whose representatives gain the most points in championship events. Otago (21) was second, and Canterbury (29 points) third. Wellington scored 19, West Coast (N.l.) 12 and H.B.-P.B. 5 Double Wins Recorded. Unwinding a brilliant finish over the final 30 yards, Ron Agate retained his 100 yards title, heading R. Sherbourne ( Wellington) to the tape by a narrow margin. C. Forsyth (Hawkes BayPoverty Bay) was third. Agate 's time was 10 l-5sec. Agate repeated his 100 yards triumph by retaining his 220 yards title, winning by two yards from Sherbourne (Wellington). The winner s time was 22 1-5sec. D. M. Harris (Auckland), running brilliantly, won the 440 and 880 yards convincingly, his margin in the 880 yards being 40 yards. About seven yards was the margin by which Wells (West Coast, N.l.) won the three miles championship. In the final stages of the race he was strongly challenged by W. N. Burrows (Otago), who made up leeway in the final lap. Wells ran a well-judged race and was in the lead for most of the journey. The winner of the three-mile walk, J. Hyslop (Otago), won the final of the one-mile walk, displacing Ihe previous champion, R. C. Brown (Canterbury). ..Hyslop won by 30 yards.
A. R. P. Eustace (Auckland) followed up his success in the 120 yards hurdles by registering a convincing win in the 220 yards hurdles. He went into an early lead and stayed there. J. M. Holland and P. V. Goddard (both of Auckland) were runner-up and third respectively. The winner's time was 25 l-5sec. In the final of the 120 yards hurdles Eustace and J. V. Devich (Auckland) fought out a stirring finish, with the honours going to Eustace, who headed his team-mate by a yard. The previous holder, C. Hunter (Wellington), was third. Auckland provisionally won the Queensland Jubilee Commemoration Shield, previously held by Canterbury, awarded to the centre whose representatives obtain the most points in records and put up the best New Zealand performances and standards. Before the trophy is presented, the times and distances are checked by the management committee of the N.Z.A.A.A. The Lovelock Cup, for the winner of the one-mile championship, went to J. C. Grierson (Auckland) and the Macassey Cup, for the winner of the 440 yards champioship, was retained by D. M. Harris (Auckland). Detailed Results.
