THREE CENTURIES SCORED

-Press Association

AUSTRALIANS NOTCH 579 HOME SIDE OPENS

By Telegraph-

AUCKLAND, March 3. The cricket match between Australia and Auckland was continued at Eden Park yesterday, the visitors taking their overnight score of 366 for three wickets to 579. It was another day of interesting cricket and three centuries were scored during the innings. On the previous day S. G. Barnes compiled 107, while K. Miller was one short of the threefigure mark. He went on to 139 before being bowled by Cowie. A. L. Hassett, who had. 28 to his credit ran to 121 and was then caught. Miller and Has sett added 158 for the fourth wicket, this being the best partnership of the innings. Later the visiting batsmen slumped somewhat, the last five wickets falling for 85 runs. There were three run-outs yesterday and one the previous day, making four in all. This reflects credit on the Auckland fieldsmen. The Auckland bowlers again held to their task well. D. C. Cleverley came through with the best figures in taking two wickets for 118. The slow bowler, C. Burke, dismissed two batsmen at a cost of 140 runs, while J. Cowie's one wicket was obtained for 153 runs. C. Kerr finished with one for 106. Auckland started badly, the first wicket falling for nine runs. At stumps the home side's total was 51 for three. Rain caused an abandonment of play at 5.25 p.m. Great interest centred in the Australian attack. R. Lindwall, who took the first wicket, is easily the fastest bowler seen at Eden Park for years. The left-hander, E. Toshack, the other opening bowler, was very steady, while W. J. O'Reilly indicated how he had made such a great reputation. B. Dooland, a spin bowler of the faster type, also created a good impression. Conditions for the match were again ideal, although Auckland had to bat in a dull light. An appeal against the light an over before rain fell was dismissed. There was an attendance estimated at 20,000, the gate takings amounting to £1740. Scores: —
