HEAVY RAIN FALLS

Press Association

HAWKE'S BAY DROUGHT BREAKS

By Telegraph—

HASTINGS, March 3. The first rain in any appreciable quantity for 38 days fell in showers in Hastings in the early hours of this morning and set in solidly this afternoon. Rain fell in most parts of the province during the early morning, the fall in some places being as much as an inch, but that recorded in Hastings was only a quarter of an inch. However, in mid-afternoon today, thunder was the forerunner to a torrential downpour in Hastings which, after about an hour, developed into a steady downpour, which continued into the evening. Prior to the weekend the rainfall recorded in Hastings for the past four months was 1.6 inches. There was no recordable fall in February.
