Hate mail for Mr Tauroa

PA Auckland The Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Hiwi Tauroa, will retire next month with a personal collection of hate mail. Mr Tauroa said he had received about two offensive letters a week since taking office six years ago and he was regularly awakened at 3 a.m. by abusive telephone callers. “It gets quite depressing when you spend a whole day trying to help people and you get a letter like that,” he said. “You do not have much

choice but to read them and suffer them.” Over the last two weeks, Mr Tauroa has received mail saying “Hooray, you’re leaving” and “Your culture ... equates with murder, rape, incest and cannibalism.” Mr Tauroa, who has a folder of such mail, said the writers often left their names and addresses and that he had received such mail from “prominent” people. He declined to give their names.
