Hitch in shearers’ pay negotiations

PA Wellington Negotiation of the shearers and shedhands’ award has failed because employers could not agree on representation, says an employers’ spokesman. Mr Timothy Plummer, president of the Sheepowners Employers’ Union, said shearing contractors wanted equal representation with sheepowners at conciliation. This could threaten the

majority of sheepowner assessors established by a conciliator in 1976, based on evidence that farmers were the prime employers, he said. Until the matter was resolved in the Arbitration Court, negotiation of claims lodged by the Workers’ Union on behalf of shearers and shedhands could not proceed. “The present award will continue to apply to all shearing and crutching rates,” Mr Plummer said.
