Live sheep ship’s sailing date undecided
PA Hamilton The Hamilton-based live sheep export ship Merino Express will be ready to sail within the week.
It is still doubtful when the next shipment will be made as the export company, Animal Enterprises, awaits Ministerial approval before continuing its live sheep shipments. The general manager, Mr Don Tate, said that although the ship had been repaired and improved to new Govern-ment-imposed standards, he was unsure when the next sailing would take place.
“We aim to get the ship checked by the week-end, then we have to get Ministerial approval,” he said. “We have the sheep but we are in limbo,” he said. The company had to improve the ship’s ventilation system and feeding space before further shipments could take place. Earlier this month, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, banned further exports after a 2.4 per cent death rate was revealed during the first shipment to Mexico.
Mr Tate said he was “fairly confident” the next shipment would run smoothly.
