Life term in prison 'just over 9 years’
PA Wellington Offenders sentenced to life imprisonment or preventive detention spend just over nine years in prison on average, according to a Justice Department parole study. The study covered life imprisonment for murder and preventive detention for repeated sexual offences as well as sentences of five or more years for person, property, or drug offences. The former offenders served nine years two months on average, while the latter were in prison for an average three years 10 months. The Minister of Justice,
Mr Palmer, said that releasing prisoners serving life or preventive detention was by no means automatic and involved “searching consideration.” The study found that the life prisoners had an average of five parole reviews before release, compared with two for those serving fixed sentences.
However, whereas 20 per cent of those paroled from fixed sentences were reimprisoned within their parole period, none released from life or preventive detention had been reimprisoned at the time of the study, which covered periods between 1976 and 1984.
