Early upsets in Savile Cup polo
The decisive win by Amuri A over Ashley A and the draw between Hawke’s Bay and Amuri B marked the first day of the Lion Brown low goal Savile Cup polo tournament at Culverden yesterday. Ashley A, with a handicap rating of eight, might have expected to gain the better of Amuri A, which had a seven-goal rating, but the Amuri players, spurred on by playing in home territory, placed the ball between the pylons far more frequently than its opposition. Hawke’s Bay, the only
North Island side in the tournament, found Amuri B an equally obdurate opponent. The northern team had a goal rating of eight compared with Amuri B’s four, but Amuri B did not succumb. It was an even contest throughout, the scores level at 6-6 stating the sixth and final chukka. Hawke’s Bay took the lead into the final chukka, but Amuri B scored the equaliser near the end of a tight, tense match. Scores: Ashburton A 11, Blenheim B 1; Amuri A 12, Ashley A 3; Hawke’s Bay 7, Amuri B 7; Ashburton B 8, Blenheim A 3.
