Young smokers

Sir,—l am stunned by the indifference which has greeted the new Health Department figures oh teen-age smoking. When a 1984 survey of fourthform students showed that 38 per cent of girls and 23 per cent of boys smoked more than 30 cigar-

ettes a week, an 11 per cent over-all rise is frightening. Smok-ing-related deaths' number more than 2000 a year in New Zealand, so the lack of public and official action is absurd and pathetic. The decision to raise cigarette prices, although effective, is typically unimaginative. Why not directly link a proportion of each extra dollar raised to a specific smoking-related use, perhaps 60 cents to cancer care and research, and 40 cents to education and promotion of a fully smoke-free lifestyle, especially for the young, females and non-pakehas. Why not follow overseas leads in formally promoting the rights of non-smokers in the workplace, and public buildings? — Yours, etc., MATTHEW BARCLAY. February 10, 1986.
