Nature conservation
Sir, — Despite receiving limited studies, the Kaitorete Spit’s natural values have stood out as worthy of further protection. The Minister of Lands, Mr Wetere, is therefore to be commended for extending the coastal dune reserve (“The Press,” February 8). However, important natural areas within the 2.7 million hectares of South Island high country public land that are' leased to farmers may not fare so well if the Government plait to place this vast area under a Land Development and Management Corporation goes ahead. By placing this area under an independent commercial body beyond meaningful public accountability, the Government would betray many of its supporters. All persons with feelings for these high country lands which have done so much to mould New Zealand’s image should press their M.P.S to have them placed under a stewardship agency. Remember that onethird of our publicly-owned natural land is involved. — Yours, etc., B. A. CALDER. February 8, 1986.
