U.S. concern over allies

Sir, — Mr Lane, the new United States Ambassador to Australia, denied that the United States would impose trade sanctions on New Zealand in retaliation for its anti-nuclear policy. When members of the Administration, Congressmen, etc., made this suggestion they were speaking as individuals but successfully scaring hell out of our more panicky pro-A.N.Z.U.S. politicians. He frankly admitted the real reason for American pressure was concern that other nations might follow New Zealand’s example, which clears our political air somewhat. Apparently Western Europe has been privately expressing its anxiety over the Administration’s sabrerattling campaign. Earlier when Hiroshima proved the power of the A-bomb many high-ranking Americans, also speaking as individuals, boasted that their new weapon “would put the commies in their place.” This was ,not conducive to winning Russian trust and whatever the good intentions of the Truman Administration, they were nullified by such comments, which carry the blame for contributing to U.S.U.S.S.R. hostility. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. February 8, 1986.
