Parents want to keep school
PA Auckland A group of Northland parents who have refused to send their children to a non-bilingual intermediate school will meet Education Department and Auckland Education Board officials this week. The parents in the Northland community have are determined to keep their 10 intermediate-age children at the local bilingual school. The education officials will travel to Northland this week to meet the parents of Mataiwa School pupils and the school committee.
Representatives of the two education authorities met in Auckland on Mon-
day to try to solve the dilemma.
The northern regional superintendent for the department, Mr Pat Foley, said it was decided the best solution would be to talk the issue through “in Maori fashion” with the parents. The general manager of the Auckland Education Board, Mr Michael Allen, said approval would be sought from board members tomorrow for the meeting. “We believe the only solution is to go over every possibility with the parents and school committee to see if there is an answer,” he said. It is expected the visit will be on Friday.
