Labour link severed

PA Gisborne The Gisborne subbranch of the New Zealand Meatworkers’ Union yesterday disaffiliated from the Labour Party in protest against the Government’s introduction of live sheep export for slaughter.

The decision was made at the annual meeting of the branch attended by more than 400 of its 650 to 700 members. Members were also concerned about other Government policies which would be made

known before the end of this week, said the union’s national president, Mr Rangi Paenga, who is also the Gisborne secretary.

He said an invitation had been given to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, to make his views known at the meatworkers’ conference this month and to hear the disapproval members had of the introduction of live sheep exports. “We see this as a very strong reduction in work for our people and perhaps the thin end of the wedge,” said Mr Paenga.
