Comet view from a ferry?
PA Wellington Special Halley’s Comet sailings on the Railways Corporation’s Cook Strait ferries are planned for early April. As part of Rail Ferry Week between April 7 and 13, the comet spotting trips would be promoted with the day excursion fares on the vessels, said the head of the corporation’s Searail section, Mr Jim Mills, yesterday.
As the ferries Arahura and Aratika cruised Cook Strait on regular nighttime sailings the masters would order deck lighting turned off, and a special commentary was planned for broadcast over the vessels’ public address system.
Mr Mills said New Zealand was billed as one of the best places in the world to view the comet.! Because the view would not be blocked by hills, or the image dulled by lights, the Cook Strait move should be popular, he said.
Another advantage was that overhead cloud would not necessarily spoil spotting because the vessels would be on the move and probably also pass beneath clear skies. Rail Ferry Week this year would be during peak comet viewing time. The day-excursion fares cost adults $25 return, and children $12.50.
