Horse liniment remedy

NZPA-AAP Sydney

The Brisbane Pan Pacific swimming gold medallist, Michael McKenzie, says horse liniment has put his Edinburgh Commonwealth Games campaign back on the rails. The Brisbane long-dis-tance swimmer, aged 18, has been battling a troublesome back injury since late last year and is racing the clock to be fit for the Commonwealth Games and World championship trials at Adelaide this month.

The injury forced McKenzie to pull out of last month’s Shelley’s New South Wales championships at Warringah, where he would have clashed with Sydney’s rising young long-distance swimmer, Stuart Feenstra, in one of the feature events.

The injury was so bad

McKenzie had to seriously curtail his regular training programme of 10,000 m a day. McKenzie said that the problem was severe muscular spasms. He had been having physio-

therapy to relieve the pain since early January. However, McKenzie said a special remedy prescribed by a University of Newcastle doctor, Professor Barry

Boettcher, had achieved the best results. “It probably sounds a bit silly but I’m using Dermcusal, an anti-in-flammatory balm that is used for thoroughbred racehorses,” he said.
