Seeds beaten in tennis
NZPA-AP Memphis, Tennessee The eighth-seeded Brad Gilbert upset the No. 1, Jimmy Connors, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and the unseeded Mikael Pemfors eliminated the No. 4, Kevin Curren, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarter-finals of the $U5315,000 ($601,650) Volvo United States National Indoor tennis championship at Memphis.
The defending champion and second seed, Stefan Edberg, easily advanced to the semi-finals ahead of the No. 7, Johan Kriek, 6-3, 6-2, and
the third-seeded Anders Jarryd eliminated the No. 6, Paul Annacone, 7-6, 7-5.
“I don’t enjoy losing to anyone,” said Connors, who has won the tournament a record seven times. “Nobody’s perfect. But I’m out there digging it out.”
Gilbert, who had never beaten Connors in three previous meetings, complained about the officiating in the first set.
"But I settled down,” he said.
“We seem to get into some wars,” Gilbert said. “I've
been on the short end. This one was sweet.” Pernfors, of Sweden, was the only qualifier to make it to the quarter-finals. The two-time National Collegiate Athletic Association champion, aged 22, broke Curren’s serve in the first game of each set. Curren, who is ranked tenth among the world’s tennis professionals, said he allowed Pernfors to dictate the game. Pernfors is ranked 157th.
