Nichola West breaks six junior records
Superb all-round performances by Wharenui’s rising star, Nichola West, dominated the Canterbury under-age swimming championships at the Centennial Pool during the week-end.
She broke six records in the 10-years-and-under section during the two-day championships, several of them by margins of up to 10 seconds.
The new marks set were in the 100 m and 200 m freestyle, the 100 m butterfly, the 100 m and 200 m backstroke, and the four-by-one medley.
Three of the records broken by West had been held by Trudi Garland. The only records to fall in the boys’ section during the championships, held in brilliantly fine weather, were broken by the Hibbs brothers of the New Brighton Hertz Club. Sean Hibbs set a new mark in the 10-years-and-under 200 m breaststroke, and Daniel Hibbs is the new record-holder in the nine years and under 100 m breaststroke.
