Nees fails by 14s

PA Wellington Peter Nees, of Dunedin, failed by 14 seconds to win every race of the national Moth sailing championships which ended on Wellington harbour yesterday. Going into the seventh and final race, Nees hadn’t been beaten and had the series title under his belt

After finishing second to Rotorua’s Peter Stacey yesterday afternoon, Nees was still able to finish the series with a perfect score of zero as competitors are allowed to discount their worst result to determine over-all placings. Stacey was the over-all runner-up with 30 points, and

Martin Balch, of Heretaunga, third on 46.8. Balch finished third in the final race.

The reigning champion, Terry Doherty, of Rotorua, failed to finish in the first five in the last race but was fourth overall.

Results: Race seven: Peter Stacey (Rotorua) 1, Peter Nees (Vauxhall Club, ■ Dunedin) 2, Martin Balch (Heretaunga) 3, David Humpherson (Evans Bay, Wellington) 4, Bruce Sellwood (Waimakariri, Canterbury) 5. Over-all: Nees 0 points, 1; Stacey 30, 2; Balch 46.8, 3;, Terry Doherty (Rotorua) 50.1, 4; Colin Sellwood (Waimakariri) 5.
