Top bowls fours ousted

PA Hamilton Several top players were ousted on the first day of post-section play at the women’s dominion bowling tournament in Hamilton yesterday. The fours winner in 1983 and 1984, Jean Ryan (Carlton), went down to Hamilton’s Doris Langley in the first round. The game went to 2019 after an extra end was played.

Langley has not lost a game during the fours. After a strong performance without a loss in section play, Cis Winstanley (Marewa) lost, 12-20, to Lyn Roach (Berhampore).

Syria Willis (Castlecliff) had a convincing win over Matamata’s Elsie Wilkie 24-9.

Two Commonwealth Games team nominees were knocked out in the first round.

Joyce Osborne (Wellington) went down, 13-18, to Flo Baird (Tauranga), and Judy Howat (Manawatu) lost, 1518, to Shirley Ross (Mount Maunganui). Rhoda Ryan (Matamata) is the only Games team nominee left in the fours, after beating June Hill (Northern), 25-16, and Sarah Matangi (Ngongotaha), 21-17.

Although last year’s fours winner Thelma Kidd (Matamata) did not qualify, another Matamata four is putting in a strong performance. Jenny Simpson has wiped out the opposition on her way through the fours. She is unbeaten with scores of 27-13,

24-7, 34-12, 38-8, 25-10, 22-12, 21-13, 25-11 and 23-16. Simpson’s new fours combination of Betty Fitzell, Norma Downey and Gay Brosnan looks in formidable form.

Last year’s fours runner up, Lex Kimber (Linwood), made it through the first round of post section play, but was then beaten by Eileen Graham (Gate Pa). The fours resume again on Sunday with the final likely to be played next Friday. The singles begin today and the pairs on Monday. Fours remaining after the first day of post-section play: S.
