Big regatta fleet
A big fleet of about 175 yachts took to the waters of Lyttelton Harbour yesterday, for the annual Canterbury Yachting Association’s Accent Lighting regatta. The first yachts to start the day’s racing were the catamarans, which struck uncomfortable conditions for the crews, and led to a number of problems with the smaller boats withdrawing in other races with broken gear as the winds freshened from the north-east quarter. The afternoon race produced unfavourable conditions for the smaller yachts as the winds increased beyond twenty knots, making heavy going for the fleet, and forced a large number to withdraw on the inner harbour courses.
There were big fleets in the Starling and Zephyr classes, and a good turnout in the keelers which sailed an outer harbour course. Results:—
