Kelly and Troup haul Auckland out of mire
PA Auckland If the Auckland cricket team wins the Shell Trophy it may look back fondly at the record tenthwicket stand between the wicket-keeper, Paul Kelly, and Gary Troup against Northern Districts at Eden Park yesterday.
Their unbroken 87-run partnership hauled Auckland out of the mire after wickets tumbled to the swing bowling of Steve Scott.
At 51 for five Auckland’s already slender chances of winning the trophy had seemingly vanished.
However, Kelly, who has come of age as a
batsman this year, scored a fighting 86 not out. Kelly and Troup (20 not out) bettered the previous best tenth-wicket stand against Northern Districts by any team.
With John Bracewell also in truculent mood, they pushed the Auckland score to 242 for nine wickets at stumps on a day marred by rain. When Kelly and Troup resume today they will have in their sights Auckland’s record tenth-wicket stand — 119 by Bill Carson and Jack Cowie in 1937/38.
