Rebels lose series, 2-4
NZPA-AAP Pretoria Kim Hughes’ Australian rebels bowed to the courage of Springbok skipper, Clive Rice, as the South Africans wrapped up the one-day series 4-2, at Berea Park, Pretoria, yesterday. Batting with a suspected broken toe, Rice inspired the Springboks to a six-wicket' victory. The injury-hit Australians were sent in to bat and seemed set to , square the series at three-all after amassing 272-6 off their 50 overs. But the rampant Springboks were not to be denied
with Rice at the helm. They replied with 273-4 to win with 10 balls to spare. Rice, named man-of-the-series, was struck on the left foot by a full toss from the paceman. Rod McCurdy, after he had scored only one run. For the next two hours he used a runner as he blasted his way to a top score of 95 not out, including eight boundaries and two sixes. Rice finished the series with an average of 114.6 and also took 13 wickets. He just pipped the former New South Wales opener, John Dyson, who made 115, for the match’s batting award.
