Ickx talks about endurance finish
NZPA-AP Brussels Jacky Ickx, the Belgian driver who has won the 24 hours of Le Mans six times, has been quoted as saying that he is retiring from endurance car racing. “It has come full circle — a car racer is like a gambler, he wins, he wins more and then one day, he has to stop or lose all,” the 41-year-old Ickx was quoted as telling the Brussels daily newspaper, “Le Soir.” His racing career has spanned a quarter of a
century in which he won 49 endurance races, 10 Formula One Grand Prix races and several other tourist class and Formula Two events. He is best known for winning endurance racing’s premier event, the 24 hours of Le Mans, a record six times in a period from 1969 to 1982. He was world champion endurance racer in 1982 and 1983. In the interview with “Le Soir,” Ickx did not exclude continuing to race in other events.
