Wave ski-ing

The South Island championships of wave ski-ing — a sport still unheard of by many New Zealanders — will be held on a beach near Christchurch this week-end. Wave skiers, armed with a paddle, sit on a shortened version of a surf ski and try to ride a wave in the way of traditional surfers. The sport, which started in South Africa, is easily

mastered, according to its leading exponent in New Zealand, Tony Brljerich. Brljerich says that wave ski-ing is popular in Australia, but so far suffers from “an enormous lack of competition” in New Zealand. The South Island championships will be held this Saturday and Sunday at either Brighton, Scarborough, or Taylors Mistake, depending on surf conditions.
