P.O. benches for the disabled
Sir, — The Post Office has spent much money in refurbishing the Savings Bank in Hereford Street. No doubt, apart from disposing of some of the Post Office’s large profits, this was to improve the efficiency of the service and the convenience of the users, both laudable objectives. However, “little people” and those using wheelchairs find the facilities less than convenient since the counters and the benches provided for customers
to write up their transactions are all well above waist height. Much has been said about improved access for people with disabilities in both private and public buildings. However, there seems little point in ensuring that buildings are accessible if the facilities within them are not. Several of the trustee banks have made particular efforts to cater for people who use wheelchairs, and it would seem reasonable for the Post Office to do the same. — Yours, etc., BARRY HAWKINS, Director, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canterbury, February 5, 1986.
