World population
Sir,—The news in “The Press” last Saturday that world population would pass 5 billion in 1987 showed that absolute population increase is still accelerating. The earth’s human cargo reached 1 billion about 1830. Successive billions have then been added in 100 years (by 1930), in 30 years (by 1969), in 15 years (by 1975) and now in 12 years. The report mentioned “the increase in family planning in Asia and Latin America” but this “increase” faces serious difficulties. In Honduras, for instance, not only have women been told that contraception causes cancer, but a survey showed that twothirds of them believe or half believe this. Of the birth control pill, one woman said: “The face gets spotty. In addition you get cancer and it destroys your nervous system." Against such ignorance and prejudice, the family planning movement has to contend with under-staffed clinics where women often wait more than two hours for service. — Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. February 2, 1986.
