Mr Luxton to retire

PA Hamilton Mr Jack Luxton, National member of Parliament for Matamata, has announced his retirement from politics at the 1987 General Election. Mr Luxton, who is 63, entered Parliament in 1966 as member for Piako, and in 1976 he was appointed Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees, posts he held until his party’s defeat in 1984.

In retirement, Mr Luxton plans to spend more time on a family horticul-

tural block at Katikati and will continue as deputy chairman of Trusteebank Waikato. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, said he was sad to learn that a senior and respected member of the National caucus would not stand for Parliament again. Mr McLay said Mr Luxton had been an exceptional Deputy Speaker who had taken Parliament through some difficult times.
