Connors’ call of the wild

NZPA-Reuter Memphis, Tennessee Jimmy Connors has vowed to start playing “like an animal again” after narrowly beating India’s Ramesh Krishnan in the second round of the $U5315,000 ($601,650) U.S. men’s indoor tennis championships yesterday. Connors, the top seed,

survived five matchpoints before winning 16, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). In the deciding set, after four straight service breaks, Krishnan moved ahead, 5-3; but with Krishnan serving for the match, Connors broke back to make it 45.

Then in the tenth game of the two hour and 32minute match, Connors

saved five match-points before holding service for 5-5. Connors then broke to lead, 6-5, but Krishnan forced a tie-breaker when he broke Connors’ service to make it 6-6. Connors, at his best in the tie-breaker, never trailed to win it, 7-3. Connors said he realised he had not been at his best in the first set

and vowed to change his style. “I came out of it when the first set was over and played a very, very good second set; but then in the third I wasn’t down to business enough,” Connors said. “I’ve been playing like a wimp for a while and now it’s time to start playing like an animal again.”
