Sober-up camp idea for town
PA Wanaka Wanaka councillors have mooted setting up an emergency camping area on the edge of Wanaka where drunks could be sent to sober up.
The proposal was made by Cr Jerry Aspinall when the Lake County Council’s district committee discussed the amount of “free" camping on lakefront reserves. Councillors were concerned about the effects of revellers in Wanaka during the New Year, and were told by the council’s works foreman that vandalism, had been prevalent. Toilet bowls had
been smashed and walls sprayed with graffiti. Wanaka has a population of about 1,500 which swells to more than 20,000 for a few days over New Year. The town has only one hotel, run by the Tourist Hotel Corporation.
Cr Paul Miller said police holiday reinforcements were insufficient. People had wrenched pipes off the petrol jetty, and he had asked the police to disperse the crowd because of the danger of the fumes exploding. A patrol could not come until it had sorted out matters at the hotel, he was told.
