Warm cloudy month
January in Christchurch was cloudy and warm, with temperatures almost 2 degrees above usual. North to north-east winds brought warm, often humid days and little rain during the first three weeks of the month. A cold southerly front
on January 28 brought heavy rain, taking the month’s total to 41mm — 10mm below average. The southerly also dropped temperatures for several days and brought snow down to about 760 metres on the Southern Alps.
