Pay rise for bank staff

PA Wellington Trusteebank staff have won wage increases averaging 18 per cent after negotitions which began in November. The Clerical Workers’ Union was partly successful in its claims for wage parity with trading bank staff, said the national secretary, John Slater, yesterday.

“We now have some rates, particularly on youth scales and for workers in their early 20s, where pay scales are higher than the trading bank rates,” Mr Slater said.

A joint classification exercise by the union and employers would continue, and the union would continue to press its claim for wage parity.

Wage increases range from 15.6 to 34 per cent. Youth workers have received more than 20 per cent and most bank staff will receive at least 16 per cent. The increases average 18 per cent Several award conditions were also, improved during the negotiations, Mr Slater said. These' included a provision requiring two union members to service automatic teller machines when a security escort was not available. The banks also agreed not to transfer staff without prior consultation, a provision of particular concern to Wellington Trusteebank workers, Mr Slater said. The final decision on a transfer remained with the banks.
