Women set record at life-saving carnival
The South Brighton women’s six place rescue and resuscitation team made history at the Hertz surf lifesaving carnival at Spencer-j ville yesterday. South Brighton entered the open competition against two men’s teams and finished second, thus being the first women’s team to earn a place in open competition in a surf carnival in Canterbury. Open competition was introduced at the start of the season and women’s teams are now eligible to compete against men at the national championships which this year will be held from March 6 to 9 at Midway beach, Gisborne. The coach of the South Brighton women’s six place team, Russell Forster, said his team had considered entering the Nelson Shield, which has previously been the trophy awarded to the winning six-man rescue and resuscitation team at the national championships. This year it will be an open competition but because the final of the women’s four place event and the heats of the women’s six place event are on the same day, and immediately before the open heats, the team had decided not to enter the open event. Yesterday, the South Brighton women finished second to their men's team with a highly creditable 8.48 points deducted. That was just over two points more than the men’s team. Their deductions were two points less than the Taylors Mistake men’s team which won the Nelson Shield last year. To be fair, Taylors Mistake was without several of Its regular team, but that could not detract from the fine performance of the South Brighton women. South Brighton is the defending national women’s six place champion and this year it has two new members in its
team, Jane Bishop and Shelly Pemberton, both competent swimmers.
A junior women’s team from South Brighton also created history in the junior competition. They competed against junior boys (under 18) teams and finished third, although well behind the two leading teams. The girls’ teams must meet the same age requirements as the boys’ teams. The South Brighton junior women’s team will compete in the junior section at the national championships rather than in the senior women's competition. Competition in the early part of the carnival yesterday was a matter of survival. A two-metre surf made the craft events particularly hazardous and several were upset in the large seas. Only two women finished the mallbu board race.
North Beach showed its expertise in the canoe and boat events by handling the surf with aplomb. The North Beach A crew won all four races and one of the two canoe races.
Taylors Mistake, an outstanding allround club, won the open Taplin relay. Waikuku was second, but the other entrants were all disqualified.
Waikuku caused a minor upset when it won the open malibu board relay beating the talented Taylors Mistake combination. Taylors Mistake later won the surf ski relay from Waimairi with Waikuku third.
The carnival was the last before the Canterbury championships which will be held next Saturday and Sunday. Abbreviations used in the results are:
