Sri Lanka downs England B XI
NZPA-Reuter Colombo A Sri Lankan team with just three test appearances between them completely outplayed England B to record a four-wicket victory in a one-day game yesterday. Sri Lanka passed the English score of 162 for eight with 3.3 overs to spare.
The home side were given a rousing start by the opener, Brendon Kuruppu, who drove the fast bowler, Norman Cowans’ first ball for four and four balls later hooked him for six.
Kuruppu put on 32 for the first wicket with Ashley de Silva and then added 55 for the second with Sumithra Waraakulasuriya. Kuruppu continued to bat steadily before he was fourth out at 126, bowled by the spinner, Nick Cook, for . 80. The opener,
named man-of-the-match, struck two sixes and six fours.
Sri Lanka needed just 37 off 10 overs and although they lost two further wickets, Roshan Mahanama, with 24 not out in 23 balls, ensured them victory. Earlier, a third-wicket stand of 77 between Derek Randall and the captain, Mark Nicholas, rescued the visitors from a dismal 27 for two before they were both dismissed within five balls.
Fine catching and some penetrative bowling reduced the touring side to 127 for seven before Cook struck a brave 18 to help England B to a reasonable score.
The pace bowler Champaka Ramanayake, ended with four for 36 off nine overs while Asoka de Silva , and : ; Ranasinghe claimed two wickets each.
