Beere wins yachting

Bill Beere, of the Christchurch Yacht Club, caused a minor upset to win the third race of the five-race Canterbury Zephyr Yachting Championship Series, sailed in fickle winds on the Estuary on Saturday. Sailing Echo, Beere took control of the race on the first windward-leeward leg from the fancied pair of Paul Stemmer, in Gamble, and the national Zephyr titleholder, John Morrison, in Victoria, who worked his way through the fleet after a bad start. Beere handled the conditions admirably to win by 2*4 .minutes from Stemmer,-with

Morrison a further 38s back in third place who had to fight grimly to hold out the fast finishing Jim Park in Pooh Stick.
