Injured climber flown to Chch

PA Timaru An Australian solo climber was yesterday reported to be in a fairly comfortable condition in Burwood Hospital after an accident while climbing Mount Cook. David Hudson, of Adelaide, was discovered late on Friday lying badly injured with severe facial injuries, including fractures, on the Empress ice shelf. He was found by another Australian climbing party returning from an ascent of Mount Cook. Two of the party stayed

with Mr Hudson and made him comfortable in a sleeping bag through the night. The third member made his way to the Empress hut to raise the alarm. Radio contact was made with park headquarters staff just before midnight. At dawn on Saturday a helicopter was flown to the area with park headquarters rescue mountaineers. Mr Hudson was flown to Timaru Hospital but was later transferred to Burwood Hospital, Christchurch.
