Second protest over tourers
NZPA-Reuter Kingstown St Vincent Twelve anti-apartheid supporters staged a second demonstration against the touring English cricketers when the match against the Windward Islands began yesterday. For two hours members of the Anti-Apartheid Solidarity Organisation of St Vincent and the Grenadines lined the entrance to the playing field carry-
ing placards with antiapartheid slogans. When the England team flew in they encountered a larger group of noisy demonstrators protesting at the presence of five members of the touring team who have played and/or coached in South Africa. The England captain, David Gower, said his team was not disturbed by the demonstrations. He said that none of the
players condoned apartheid, adding they wanted to stay out of the controversy. “We respect people’s rights to hold their own opinions," Gower said. “We respect those opinions when they are brought to our attention, but we’ll just get on with the game. “As much as we can we are just going to try and shrug off any trouble that arises.”
