Britain gives $1M towards Aust. ship
NZPA-AAP , London ; The British Government will contribute £1 million ($2.65 . million) towards the cost of asailtraining ship as a gift to Australia for the 1988 bi-centenary. British Foreign Secretary, .Sir Geoffrey Howe, announced, the decision in London- ", Britain had already announced that it would consider a million-pound Government'-to-Govern-mentgift, but had not outlined what it would be used for. Sir Geoffrey said the
sailing ship would be used for training the youth of Australia, and would serve as a lasting reminder of the ties of friendship ties between the two nations. The British Government has asked private enterprise to match the million pounds for the project "This gift to Australia is not by way of’ alimony, but more of a birthday present “It might even help train future winners of the America’s Cup,” he said.
