World nears 5 billion population
NZPA-Reuter Washington The global population grew by 85 million in 1985 to 4.9 billion- people, the private Washington-based Population Institute' reports. The institute said that although the yearly rate of world fi population growth declined from 2 per cent in 1970 to 1.7 per
cent jn 1985, total numbers continued to increase, with fertility rates remaining high and death rates declining.
The institute said that in spite of the increase in family planning in Asia and Latin America, the world population was expected to reach five billion by mid-1987 and six billion by the end of the century.
