Fleece prices were generally firm or slightly reduced compared with recent sales when 28,652 bales of Christchurch and Timaru wools sold in Christchurch yesterday, according to the official report. The report is compiled by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters. Compared with the Dunedin sale on January 23, Merino fleece was nominally in buyers’ favour, as were fine Halfbred, 27 micron, B style medium Halfbred, 28-29 micron, and strong Halfbred, 30-31 micron. B/C style medium was up 2.5 per cent. Compared with the Wellington sale on January 30, fine and medium crossbred, 33 to 35 micron, were firm, strong crossbred, 37 micron, was generally unchanged, and the second-shear was in sellers’ favour. The crossbred lambs’ wool was up to 2 per cent down, skirtings were up 2.5 per cent, better style oddments were up 2.5 per cent, and poorer style firm. The Wool Board gave limited support to the market by bidding on 13 per cent, or 3692 bales, and having 795 bales, 2.8 per cent, sold or passed to it. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 347.73 c greasy and 467.63 c clean, and the market indicator was 344 c greasy and 462 clean.
