Man enters no plea
PA Palmerston North The 20-year-old man alleged to have been at the centre of Palmerston
North’s hostage drama on January 13 entered no plea to two charges arising from the incident when he appeared in the District Court at Palmerston North. John Howard Barnes, a labourer, of Palmerston North, appeared in court on January 15 and was remanded to Lake Alice for a psychiatric report. He has now been remanded in custody to February 3 to allow counsel, Mrs P B Harvey, time to read the report. Judge Kearney remanded Barnes to the Manawatu Prison at Linton with an order for him to be kept apart from other inmates. Barnes is charged with unlawfully detaining Benita Marie Rowberry without her consent with intent to cause her to be confined.' “He *' is also charged with presenting a firearm, at Alan Ivan McKay, without lawful and sufficient purpose. Further charges are likely to be heard when Barnes next appears. An earlier order . for the supression of the complainant’s name was not continued.
