Addicts and A.I.D.S.
Sir,—Poor Les Bogren. It is no wonder that he wishes that the correspondence on A.1.D.5., homosexuality and drug addiction was closed. In his first letter (January 18) he blundered in on a subject about which he displayed a grossly parochial attitude. He utilised tired rhetoric based on the Old Testament in an attempt to persecute homosexuals and drug addicts. Then, in his next letter (January 25), after it was pointed out to him by various correspondents that his viewpoint was the antithesis of morality, Mr Bogren tried to be more moderate and reverted to the use of silly comparisons (flu, leprosy, A.1.D.5.) to defend his view. In his last letter (January 28) Mr Bogren wrote that because of his stance he has received “filthy letters and obscene phone calls." That is appalling and unfortunate, but it does remind one of what members of vulnerable minorities — especially homosexuals — are constantly subjected to. —Yours, etc. HUGO STEINCAMP. January 28, 1986. [Not because of or in spite of Leslie Bogren’s wishes, this correspondence is now closed.— Editor.]
