Addicts and A.I.D.S.

Sir,—P. Spence (January 25) obviously does not know that official American figures show that 98 plus per cent of A.I.D.S. cases transmitted by sexual contact are due to homosexuality, i.e. sodomy. There are medical reasons for the fact that A.I.D.S. is not passed on by normal heterosexuality. Any arguments that our lifestyle is different or that legalising homosexuality will make A.I.D.S. more controllable are pure supposition. Legalising sodomy in the face of such figures is an appalling risk. Those in favour should ponder the reaction of the rest of the community — not to mention their own consciences — if this should happen. We are dealing with a situation without parallel and therefore must make the most careful research in the light of recent experience.— Yours, etc.,

ri VERNON WILKINSON. “ January 27, 1986.
