Sour grapes
Sir, — I am a lowly sickness beneficiary struggling to eke out a living not too many miles from the St Helena Vineyards, which I understand will be paid the princely (to me) sum of $6175 a hectare to pull out temperamental vines and replant with other more sought-after varieties. As these vines were to be pulled out anyway, why are the growers being paid at all? Although I am not producing grapes for wine, I have growing “temperamental” runner beans, but I like to share my produce with others, so perhaps the Ministry of Agriculture would like to accord me, and other beneficiaries and your average taxpayer, a subsidy commensurate to the size of property so we could replant and start
over again and also supply a free market. — Yours, etc., R. F. WILSON. Waikuku Beach, January 25, 1986.
