In Bishop Harper’s defence

Sir, —Father Bowron’s attack on Bishop Harper in his article in “The Press,” January- 23, scarcely warrants a reply as the

writer’s views are obviously prejudiced by his Anglo-Catholic high churchiness. In connection with the Bishop’s treatment of Dr Jenner I quote from H. T. Purchase “Bishop Harper and the Canterbury Settlement,” page 168: “. . in 1878 when he (Harper) laid his case before the second Lambeth Conference his brother bishops saw the propriety of his course and the wisdom with which he had acted. In New Zealand itself his action was appreciated from the first, and he was increasingly trusted from one end of the colony to the other.” — Yours, etc., PETER B. MALING. January 27, 1986.
