Scott Base huskies
Sir, —The D.S.I.R.’s decision to destroy the Antarctic huskies is sickening. Although it has been said that the pack’s continued existence is threatening the local seal colony, the real problem must be a financial one. Frozen meat for the 18 huskies could be flown to the frozen continent along with all the scientific personnel and equipment whose objective is the pursuit of knowledge and hence ultimately the improvement of man’s lot. Do the D.S.I.R.’s presumably humanitarian principles not extend to the lives of a few working dogs who have become expendable? At the very least the huskies should be allowed to live out their natural lives.— Yours, etc., MARTIN HUNN. January 24, 1986.
