N.Z. man faces kidnap charge

NZPA-AAP Sydney A 50-year-old Indian from New Zealand yesterday appeared in Sydney's Waverley court, on charges of unlawful detention, assault and kidnapping. The alleged offences happened in New Zealand in 1983 and 1985. Armit Lal Narain was arrested in Sydney on Saturday, under a provisional warrant by the New Zealand police, who would today seek his extradition back to New Zealand.

Police alleged yesterday that Narain, a religious commune leader in Greytown in the Wairarapa, illegally detained Nell Grate Arnitt, and assaulted her on several occasions.

He was further charged with kidnapping Arnitt by bringing her to Sydney in June last year against her will.

The court was told Narain had threatened her with a hot poker, beaten her with pipes, and kept her imprisoned in a pit in a garage. It also was alleged that Narain took her off medication for epilepsy claiming he could cure her, refused her food and made her take cold showers.

Mr Roth Wall, for Narain, said his client was a victim of a politically motivated witchhunt. He said Narain had information on corruption and misdealings within the New Zealand Maori Affairs Department. Magistrate Scanlon refused bail after hearing evidence from police that Narain would possibly interfere with witnesses. He was remanded to appear again in Waverley Court this morning. No plea has been entered.
