Aust. coasts to victory

NZPA-AAP Adelaide Australia coasted to a 36-run victory over its World Series Cup rival, India, at the Adelaide Oval yesterday. The Australians justified their place at the top of the W.S.C. ladder after bowling India out for 226 in the forty-fifth over in reply to Australia’s formidable 262 for eight Man of the Match was the Western Australian fast bowler, Bruce Reid, who finished with the fine figures of five for 53. Australia’s grasp on the match was always tight apart from an hour during which Sunil Gavaskar — who returned to the side yesterday after injury — and the elegant Ravi Shastri added 97 runs to give their side a chance of victory.

Gavaskar was finally out for 77 and Shastri, 55, while for the Australians Steve Waugh starred with a well-made 81.

However, Waugh was fortunate to be given the benefit of a dubious runout call from the umpire, Ray Isherwood, when he was on two. AUSTRALIA D. Boon c Kulkami b Ghai 27 G. Marsh c Vengsarkar b Shanna 25 A. Border c Kapil Dev b Shastri 9 G. Ritchie run out. . . . 28
