Argentinian hockey tour in August?

The Argentine hockey team is likely to make its first tour of New Zealand in early August the New Zealand Hockey Association’s management committee has been told. Mr Dave Coulter, who attended the Inter-Contin-ental Cup in Barcelona last October, discussed the possible tour with members of the Argentine team’s management He received a letter last week stating that the team was willing to make a short tour of New Zealand in early August to play two or three test matches, and several other matches. Firm dates and the tour itinerary have yet to be finalised, but the N.Z.H.A. has a tentative agreement witiuTelevision New Zealand'for one of the tests to be shown on August 2. Both Argentina and

New Zealand will play in the World Cup in London in October and the series in New Zealand would be used as an important build-up to that competition.

New Zealand is the logical place for Argentina to seek international matches. Of the higher ranked hockey nations, New Zealand is the closest in proximity to Argentina.

The N.Z.H.A. has received a letter and questionnaire from the Australian Hockey Association which proposes introducing a Commonwealth hockey tournament in 1987. Australia has said it will host the first tournament in Sydney and if sufficient teams enter it withhold the tournament in two sections.

More than 40 countries would be eligible to enter and the standards would vary greatly, but the top section would be highly competitive if Australia, India, New Zealand, Malaysia, Canada and the four home countries entered.

Ireland would pose a problem. At present the Irish hockey team is chosen from both Eire and Northern Ireland. A separate team from Northern Ireland would have to be chosen for the tournament. The final of the Challenge Shield at the national tournament will be played in Wellington on September 6. The association had tentatively set the date at September 7, but changed it to accommodate live television.
