Hurunui River fishing statistics released
Anglers fishing in the Hurunui River in the 1981-82 season fished for about seven days each and caught, on average, half a salmon and four trout each. These statistics have been released by the Fisheries Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and are based on a survey of angling in the Hurunui River.
A 92 per cent response rate was received to the survey, 1077 replies being sent in. This meant a sampling of 8 per cent of all North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society fishing licence holders.
The need for the survey, the third annual survey, arose from the increasing pressure of proposed hydro electric and irrigation development on the river. The division has been gathering knowledge on the fishery and recreational value of the river to help assess the potential impacts of development. The surveys have shown
that the lower reaches of the river, particularly the mouth, are the most popular and productive areas for salmon fishing. Trout angling and the bulk of the trout catch are made in the upper north branch.
